When Ephesus works best

Ephesus is an open-air site with little shelter. That makes the season matter more than at a museum. Late spring and early autumn give the mildest temperatures. July and August are hot, with average daytime highs around 33 °C and single days well above that. From November to March it is cooler and wetter, and the site is open fewer hours.

Whenever you go, start early. If heat is your main worry, a morning departure on one of our Ephesus tours puts you in the ruins before the middle of the day. If you arrive by ship, check the section on cruise days below.

What each season means for your visit

Practical points, not promises.

Spring: April and May

Highs rise from 21 °C to 26 °C, and rain falls to about 31 mm in May. For 2026, the period from 1 May to 1 June had ticket desks closing at 18:00 at the upper entrance and 19:00 at the lower one, with the grounds closing at 20:00. That rule was limited to those dates, so check the hours for your own year.

Summer: June to August

This is the hot season. Bring water, a hat and sun protection, start at opening and take breaks. The ruins offer no guaranteed shade, so do not plan on a full visit in the shade. Closing times in summer can run into the evening, so look up the time for your date.

Autumn: September and October

Highs fall from 29 °C to 24 °C, and rain returns in October. Autumn is a good time if you prefer cooler days, but pack a light rain layer for October. Late summer is dry, and the Aegean region has a general risk of wildfire in dry months, so follow local advice.

Winter: November to March

Highs are between 12 °C and 19 °C and rain is frequent. From 1 October 2026 to 1 April 2027 the site is open 08:00 to 18:00, with the desk closing at 17:30. The Terrace Houses are open 09:00 to 17:00, with the desk closing at 16:30, so see them first if daylight is short. Wear shoes with a good sole for wet stone.

Cruise days and evening visits

On days when several ships call at Kuşadası, expect more visitors at the site. The port publishes a calendar of arrivals, so check your date before you plan. An early start helps with the heat, but it does not guarantee a quiet visit. Our page on Ephesus from Kuşadası covers the transfer.

In 2026 an evening programme ran from 1 June to 1 October on Wednesday to Saturday, with entry from 19:00 and closing at 23:00. Whether it runs in your year is worth checking before you plan around it. The Aegean MuseumPass, which costs €95 and lasts 7 days, does not cover evening visits. For prices and passes, see tickets and opening hours.
