How Ephesus tours differ
The same ancient city is offered in very different packages. A tour can be a private guide who meets you at your hotel, a small group from Kuşadası, a transfer without a guide, a shore excursion built around a cruise schedule, or a day trip with a flight from Istanbul. Each product has its own start point, return point and list of what is included.
Providers run day trips from Istanbul, İzmir and Kuşadası, and there is a combination with Pamukkale. A visit to the main site takes about 2 hours 30 minutes as a guide figure, and the drive from the Kuşadası cruise port is about 25 minutes. Prices below are examples for 2026 and change by date and group size.

Our picks: guided Ephesus tours
Our take: the small-group tour with lunch is the most booked and good value. Choose the private tour if you want your own guide, and the all-inclusive tour if you prefer not to buy entries on site.

Tour types compared
What each type is, and who it suits.
| Type | Starts from | Good for | Check before you book |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private guide | Selçuk, Kuşadası, İzmir | Your own pace, families, special interests | Whether the entry tickets are included and the price is per person or per group |
| Small group | Selçuk, Kuşadası, İzmir | Solo travellers and couples who want a guide at a lower price | Group size, language and any shopping stops |
| Transfer only | Kuşadası, İzmir, hotels | Visitors who want to explore alone with a ride | Where you are collected and returned, and the waiting time |
| Cruise shore excursion | Kuşadası cruise port | Cruise guests on a fixed schedule | The return time and whose promise it is |
| Day trip from Istanbul | Istanbul, with a flight to İzmir | Visitors with one day and no way to stay overnight | Flight times, transfers and what is included |
| Ephesus and Pamukkale | Istanbul, İzmir or Selçuk | Two sights in one trip | The order of the stops and the number of days |
For most visitors staying near Selçuk or Kuşadası, a small-group or private tour that lists the entry ticket and the Terrace Houses clearly is the simplest choice. Cruise guests are better served by a shore excursion with port pickup, and independent travellers can combine tickets with the self-guided route.
What to check before you book
Tour titles tell you little. The included list tells you more.
Entry tickets
Do not assume the Ephesus ticket is included just because the title mentions Ephesus. The ticket is €40 for foreign adults in 2026.
Ticket prices →Terrace Houses
They have their own €15 ticket and are not part of every tour. If you want to see the mosaics and frescoes, look for them in the list.
Terrace Houses →Pickup and return
Check the start point, the return point and the airport or port, especially if you leave by plane or ship the same day.
Language and group size
Look for the guide language and the maximum group size, and for any stop at a shop that is part of the schedule.
Flights and extras
For day trips from Istanbul, check whether the flight is in the price, as well as lunch, drinks and the House of the Virgin Mary entry.
Day trip from Istanbul →Cancellation terms
Read the terms of the product you choose. A free cancellation period is a detail of each tour, not a general rule.
Tour or on your own?
You can visit Ephesus with an entry ticket and no guide. A guide adds the stories behind the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the Terrace Houses, and a tour adds transport. On your own, you set the pace and can spend as long as you like at each stop, see the route from the upper to the lower gate.
Ephesus is one of several sights in the area. If you plan a longer trip, read about the combination with Pamukkale, and for details on the terraces, pools and Hierapolis see Pamukkale tours. A provider's promise of an on-time return belongs to that provider, not to a cruise line or the port, so read what it covers.

Ephesus tours: frequently asked questions
How long does an Ephesus tour take?
It depends on the type. The main site takes about 2 hours 30 minutes as a guide figure, plus the drive. From the Kuşadası cruise port the drive is about 25 minutes. A day trip from Istanbul with a flight is shown at 15 hours by one provider.
Are the entry tickets included in the tour price?
Not always. Some tours include them and some do not. Read the included and not included lists, and do not infer it from the title. The ticket is €40 for foreign adults in 2026.
Do I need to book a tour to visit Ephesus?
No. You can visit with an entry ticket on your own. A tour is useful if you want a guide, transport or a fixed schedule. See the tickets page.
Are the Terrace Houses part of a tour?
Only if the product says so. The Terrace Houses are a separate €15 ticket and close earlier than the site in winter, at 17:00.
Can I do Ephesus and Pamukkale in one day?
Providers offer a day trip by plane from Istanbul that combines them, and two-day versions as well. Plan the order and the travel time with care, see Ephesus and Pamukkale.
Is this an official tour site?
No. This is an independent travel guide, not connected to the state museums, the excavation team or any tour operator or cruise line. Each tour is run by its own provider.
