Three bases, three kinds of trip

Places to stay near Ephesus fall into three areas: the town of Selçuk, the village of Şirince and the coastal resort of Kuşadası. The right one depends on what else you want from the trip. The ruins are in Selçuk, so staying there keeps the trip short. The other two give you a different setting in exchange for more travel.

If you arrive by cruise ship and only need a day, you may not need a bed at all. Our page on Ephesus shore excursions from Kuşadası shows how to do the visit in one day. For anything longer, read on.

What each base offers

Hotel names and room prices change, so this page compares the areas, not individual properties.

Selçuk

The town has the railway station, the bus station and the dolmuş to the lower gate of the ruins, about 7 minutes away. In town you can walk to the Ephesus Museum, the Basilica of St John, Ayasuluk Hill and the İsa Bey Mosque. The Artemision is also close. You can reach the ruins at opening time without a long transfer. See things to do in Selçuk.

Şirince

The village lies 8 km from Selçuk. It is known for old houses, some of which are now guesthouses, and for wine houses and restaurants. A stay here is about the village evening, not about quick access. You will need a second journey to reach the site every day. Tastings are not automatically free, so ask about the price.

Kuşadası

This is the coastal town with the cruise port, about 25 minutes from the ruins by road. Private transfers quote 30 to 35 minutes depending on the start and the gate. It makes sense if you want a seaside stay and plan Ephesus as one or two trips out. Allow extra time on days when several ships are in port.

How to choose

Start with your plan. If Ephesus is the main reason for the trip, stay in Selçuk and use the winter hours of 08:00 to 18:00 (1 October 2026 to 1 April 2027) or the longer hours of the warmer months. If you want village life and an evening with local food and wine, stay in Şirince and budget time for the road. If you combine the ruins with the coast, stay in Kuşadası.

When you compare rooms, check four things: the distance to the bus station or to the car park, whether breakfast is early enough for an opening-time start, how you get there from the airport, and how to pay. The airport options are on our getting there page. Prices for the ruins are on the tickets page. Think about timing too, and read the best time to visit Ephesus before you fix dates.
